And from the mist came a white glow.

Bobbing, gently, without caution or concern.

A message, from beyond the boards, the 3rd TNT Newsletter is here. (short one this week)

You've already signed up to get the newsletter, obviously 😉 , but I'd like to encourage you to get your guild-mates to sign up as well. The more folk signed up the better. E-mail addresses will be kept private, and will only be used to send out this newsletter on a weekly basis, so it's safe to sign up. Spread the word!

If you feel like contributing something to the newsletter, or have any feedback on it, please drop me a mail at tnt-newsletter@darkstorm.co.uk and I'll see what I can do.

Raid Loot - the guild's officers are reviewing the loot strategy during raids, and are suggesting a move towards a DKP system. Constructive feedback on this direction is always welcome, please head along to the boards and take the time to take part - pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...=190.topic

Behave! - Eloina took the time to remind us about the guild's charter, specifically the section on respect. Serayus followed that up with the following quote from the charter,

Respect: Hands-down, the single most important thing.
Treat everyone in the game with the respect you'd like to be shown.

Gone Berserk? Then check out www.goberserker.com - new site, so not full of info, but seems to be a nice gathering point for berserker info.

If you undertake any tradeskills, you just must hang out here - www.eqtraders.com - *the* best tradeskill information anywhere on the web. They suffered a hard disk crash a while back and LDoN recipes got lost, but they're being added back in. Join up, take part, improve the information, and help all tradeskillers.

Introduction

And so a bright new light dawns over the second edition of the TNT Newsletter. Thanks to those of you who've stuck with us over the last edition and welcome to those of you who are new to this, the sparkling new 2nd edition. The plan is to send one of these out each week, on Wednesdays, containing any news about the guild. If there's not much news, it'll be a short one. Wednesday seems a good day, since it can help you catch up on any activity over the last weekend, and prepared you for anything coming up next weekend.

The newsletter is not a replacement for the board, and more often than not will just summarise something and provide a link - so, go sign up and take part - pub21.ezboard.com/btrulynaughtytroop

News

More levelling goodness - Teiry hit the magic 65 last week, grats Teiry, meanwhile the guild gained it's latest 60th level character when Belkhanu dinged 60, grats Belk.

400's the Magic Number - as Serayus explained in this post (pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...187.topic) the guild has exceeded more than 400 characters (including alts) for the first time since it was created. Yay us. He doesn't mention that most of those are his, Moone's and Frappo's 😉

Gates of Discord is out - as if you hadn't noticed. Also, by the time you read this, the new tradeskill UI should be live (yay), the casino is back (er perhaps yay), and 'Zerkers are wandering the land. Why not post your first GoD experiences on the board (assuming you got the expansion).

I've been to a couple or three of the GoD zones, and took some screen shots (these are from the next zone on from Natimbi, I can't recall the name!), www.darkstorm.co.uk/galle...me=album06 Reports suggest the mobs hit for around 500 and are about the same toughness as PoV mobs. Every mob in those screenshots was dark blue at level 65.

Strapped for cash? Again? Where does it all go? Well, Eloina wrote an excellent post on the boards covering how to earn a little bit of cash on the side. This won't make you a million plat, but it will help cover your outgoings, buy your spells and get you some upgrades or resist gear - pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...=142.topic

Torv boards - some people may consider this link useful, some might consider it the cesspit of the 'net, but here you go - pub173.ezboard.com/btorvboard - that's the location of the semi-official Torv boards. Sometimes there's something useful, mostly it's retirement messages and flames, caution is advised. Oh, and wear your flack jacket.

Introduction

Welcome to the first TNT Newsletter. Not all of our members have web access as often as others, and for some people, the EZBoard site isn't easy to visit regularly. The aim of this newsletter is to provide a summary of what's been going on in the guild over the last week, point out any upcoming events, and post links to useful information. It isn't intended to replace the EZBoard forum, and you are still strongly encouraged to visit and sign up to the boards (pub21.ezboard.com/btrulynaughtytroop).

You've already signed up to get the newsletter, obviously 😉 , but I'd like to encourage you to get your guild-mates to sign up as well. The more folk signed up the better. News

Chardok Fun and Cleric Epics - TNT carried out their first raid to the Overseer King in Chardok (with the help of one or two friends). For a first raid against the King it went well, and two clerics (Orth and Serayus) are a step closer to their epics. The fighting was scrappy and there was one wipe with a long CR, but we still dropped the king twice, and we still kicked their asses. Next time we'll be more focussed (repeat that mantra!)

TNT folk have been levelling like crazy 🙂 Every level is sweet, but some sweeter than others. Krokker hits 60 🙂 Congratulations to the latest TNT member to hit the 60 mark. Echinaccea hits 65 🙂 Congratulations to the latest TNT member to hi 65 🙂 Earlier in the month, Torelian made 60 (and more ....) - congrats Torelian.

Not really news, not really a useful link, so I'll drop it in here. On two of the Kael raids, towards the end, I took some screenshots of the Troop in action, you can find them all here - www.darkstorm.co.uk/galle...me=album01 and here www.darkstorm.co.uk/galle...me=album05

I did try to take some shots during the HoT raid, but there was never a good time - boring without any mobs present, and far too busy while they were there - perhaps another time when we have more folk and I can stop the DPS for short while.

Duplicate Spells - you only have until the 8th of February to claim the duplicate spells that Moonebeam has posted on the board - you can find the full list here pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...=181.topic but some highlights, Improved Invisibility, Call of Earth, Tears of Druzzil, Bristlebane.s Bundle, Splurt, and many others. Head along to that posting and claim those spells before they go to a vendor. Only four days left - hurry.

Leaflighter is a new addition to the guild, but he has already worked on some nice UI changes with TNT in mind, you can check out his work here users.hcis.net/parisforge/Leaf.htm.

Upcoming Events

Plane of Sky (PoS / Plane of Air)
Torelian has scheduled a raid on the Plane of Sky for Friday 13th February. No detailed information as yet, but Tore has said he'll be updating the post soon - here's a link to the raid posting itself - pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...=144.topic

Halls of Testing (HoT)
There isn't currently a scheduled HoT raid, however, it's still very much worth your while checking out the HoT section on the guild boards and familiarising yourself with the area, because there will be more raids soon, and the more people we have the better we'll do. The board has a specific section for HoT here pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...roopfrm18. It's also worth your while to improve your CoV faction (by killing giants in GD, EW, Kael) - non-KOS is enough to raid in HoT, but you need ally in order to hand in the armour which drops in ToV. Grab some guildies and go waste some giants - it's your duty 🙂

------------ // ------------

Help Wanted

Krokker is looking for someone to help him put a Hole raid together. It's for part of his epic, but he's not that familiar with the hole, so is looking for a raid leader to step forward from our ranks and help him out. Full details on the board, at pub21.ezboard.com/ftrulyn...=143.topic

Let me know if you're looking for assistance - but post it on the ezboard as well - you'll get better coverage that way.

------------ // ------------

Useful Links

Hopefully in this section we'll be able to provide one or two useful links per newsletter, providing additional background information to the game.

Firstly, a hint about eq.crgaming.com - generally this website is out of date and contains old and incorrect spell information. I would strongly urge you to be cautious when using this site for research. Some of the information is useful (for example, which ingredients are required for spells), but some information is just totally out of date (they still don't have the spell Dead Men Floating listed at all, and Strike of Solusek is described as 'causing damage to the caster as well'). The news section is usually up-to-date but can go for a while without any additions. Generally, Caster's Realm is behind the times and should be dealt with carefully.

Allakhazam on the other hand (everquest.allakhazam.com) is much more up-to-date and is being updated constantly. Sometimes the information is buried deep on Allakhazam and is hard to get to, but when you do find it, it is mostly accurate and very useful. Unfortunately the most useful information on Allakhazam is for premium members only, but the cost is very small and well worth it if you want to be able to search on items and other information. Allakhazam's spell list is up-to-date and accurate (although it's still not 100% accurate).

Haze

So I’ve wandered out of my Everquest induced haze. Being offline for three weeks while moving house and waiting for ADSL has sort of made me go Everquest cold turkey. And while I’ve played a couple of times since getting connected, I don’t feel obliged/the need to play all the time, so I’m doing more and more of the ‘net stuff I used to. Hence this diary entry.

New house is nice, much nicer than the old place. Feels more like a home already.

Spending most of today writing procmail scripts to bin the latest virus/worm/e-mail infection, looks pretty virulent, had a few hundred in a short period (few hours). Probably because the e-mail looks pretty legit and convincing.

Thinking of a revamp for the web pages, perhaps changing to a new domain to move away from my spam-filled darkstorm.co.uk e-mail addresses, or perhaps just moving more stuff to the darkstorm.co.uk site, dunno yet.

Tired?

Tried sleeping at 11pm, didn’t work, too many distractions. Why do people feel it’s ok to shout at each other, rev their car engines and beep their horns at 11pm?

So here I am, playing EQ at midnight.

Long Time No See

So it’s been a while. I seem to start lots of diary entries like that. It’s been a while because life and EverQuest have been an issue.

House sale possibly going ahead, new buyer, still waiting for full details, fingers crossed, no expectations this time.

Work out-sourcing still going ahead. Deja-Vu time, really weird.

Other stuff pretty much as normal.

Post-LRP

Omega LRP event was very relaxing, and probably enjoyable. The weather wasn’t terrible either which made the whole thing easier to deal with. And now it’s over, I’m much more relaxed.

Tomorrow we’re off to get some books signed by David Gemmell, which is nice 😉

We’ve sent off more paperwork for the house, which I hope means that it is going ahead. I guess the buyer will want us to empty the place, although I’m not sure.

Roleplaying and Me

There was a time when every page on the Internet had a section on ‘what is roleplaying’. These days, awareness seems to be much greater, and there’s less need to explain things. This is a good thing[tm]. There is still a lot of misunderstanding around about what roleplaying is as well though. This is a bad thing[tm].

Am I going to fix that? Probably not. I roleplay. With friends. It’s most excellent fun, and when I’m not feeling too stingy, I GM the odd game now and then as well. I like to think I’ve got a lot of roleplaying experience, but that’s not true. I’ve played quite a bit, and run quite a bit, but my actual experience is quite narrow. I’m doing my best to fix that though.

Now we’ve moved down here to Nottingham, we are both playing more than we were in Stockton. Once during the week with a couple of long-standing friends, and once at weekends with some new-found friends. So far, things are going well!

I have played quite a few gaming systems at one time or another, including, but not limited to, [in a semi-quasi-chronological-order]

  • Dungeons and Dragons [original]

This is the game I started playing first, while I was still at school. I still own all the rules and several (many?) modules and accessories. I was looking for a second-hand copy of the D&D Rules Cyclopedia, and finally found it on e-bay.

  • Dungeons and Dragons, 3rd Edition

Well, Wizards of the Coast have done the deed. They’ve released the third edition of AD&D, they’ve dropped the Advanced bit (since the original D&D is out of print, there’s nothing to be Advanced from), and they’ve revamped the rules quite a bit. I like it. The Players Guide certainly seems more mature than the 1st/2nd Edition versions, the rule changes are sensible, they’ve dropped THAC0, and they’ve made the combat rules more specific.

  • Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, 1st & 2nd Editions

At the time, this was an entirely natural progression from D&D. We managed to play quite a few adventures owning only the DM’s guide, I’ll never know how we managed. Anyway, started with 1st edition, still got the rules (DM’s guide only of course!), and now own far too much 2nd Edition stuff. I’ve also converted just about every AD&D spell name into pigeon-latin. Yes I know I’m sad, but it adds atmosphere to the game.

  • Warhammer FRP

I haven’t played anywhere near enough of this – it’s quite an excellent system. I really must buy the rules one day. [Update : 24/1/99 – Got the rules for Christmas from Grete!

Further update : now have a couple of modules and a source book as well. Really must play more of this.

  • Super Hero thingy [Golden Heroes? Golden Super Heroes?]

I played a little bit of one of the super hero RPG genres. Couldn’t get to grips with it though.

  • Call of Cthulhu

I wouldn’t have expected to enjoy this, but I did. It’s excellent, and with a GM who can create atmosphere (David Sant and Tony Byrne for example) it’s superb. Getting your face sucked off has never been so much fun.

  • Paranoia

I ran this, I’ve never played it. Howling laughter. Screams of agony. Most excellent. The computer is your friend. Can’t always get it right though – we tried to play this a short while back (mid-2000) and I totally failed to generate the right atmosphere, total disaster 🙁

  • MERP

Playing this at the moment (20/9/98 – when I forget to update this for 12 months, someone let me know). It’s good, I’m enjoying messing about in Tolkein’s world, although it feels a bit like messing about in his garden. Any minute he’s gonna see me and chuck me out! [Update : 24/1/99 – Andy let me know, we’re playing some other stuff now!! Although we’re still intending to get back to the MERP]

  • Toon

One game so far – enjoy it – hopefully more to come.

  • Force Lords

A new game some friends are putting together, very enjoyable, had two or three playtesting style games now!

  • Pendragon

One game of this as well, went hunting some deer I recall. I keep meaning the buy the rulebook.

  • Ars Magica

We’re just starting to roll up characters for this [as of 21/4/99] which takes some time in it’s own right, and then we’ll get round to playing it.

Well, we tried playing it, and it didn’t go too well (perhaps I can’t GM after all), although I think people want to try again.

  • Deadlands

Andy has the rules – we’ll be playing it eventually!

  • Xena & Hercules

Well, it was a bit of fun, and quite entertaining I thought 😉

  • Legend of the Five Rings

[September 2000] We’re currently playing this, and it’s currently excellent 🙂 The Dragon Clan is mighty indeed. I love the rules, I love the background, I love the humour, I really do like the system.

[June 2001] We haven’t been playing this for a while now, and in fact, we’re now playing D&D 3rd Edition.

  • Torg

Played a couple of times, but I can’t get on with the system, we will probably try a few more times.

  • 7th Sea

Not played yet, but Christine has the rules and sourcebooks, and we will be rolling up characters soon.

  • Fading Suns

Played a couple of times, I quite enjoyed it, but I was playing a combat wombat at the time, and as a group we never really seemed to gell.

  • Live Action Roleplaying [LRP, LARP]

Until I met Grete, I’d wondered about LARP, and considered it, but never got around to it. We couldn’t make the ’96 or ’97 Gathering, and we didn’t find any local places in Stockton (we had no transport). Again, the move to Nottingham helped, and my first Live Action Roleplaying was with the Melnobs, in the Viper faction, at this years Gathering (98). It was most excellent fun. We’re going to try and make some moots, and perhaps some smaller, more local events, but you know how cash is …

Update 18/04/99 – we did make it to the Omega LRP event in Manchester.

Updated 21/9/99 – and I’ve banged a couple of LRP related websites together, check out The Lorgaire De Eolas and Just Another Gathering Website.

Updated 13/9/2000 – Well, we’ve been ‘doing’ Omega for two years now, I really can’t believe it. We’ve done four events, we’re quite established! We are very much looking forward to the next event, in 2001. One problem with two events per year, the years seem to fly by!

Updated : 01/12/2001 – my character died at the last Omega event. So I’m now playing a salamander wizard 😉

Gathering

I’ve been to the Gathering! My first LARP experience – it was good. I wasn’t expecting too much actual roleplaying at an event with 5000 people, but I did get some in, and it was generally an excellent four days. Hopefully we’ll both be there again next year.
